Jill Alo-Oil Painting, Printmaking, Collage
Art has always seemed to me the best way to respond to reality, and to connect with other people. I started by drawing my little brother, then the horse I thought I had to have when I was eight…
For a long time I resisted becoming an artist, I was always told ‘but you can’t make a living that way'—and then the biographies of artists often seemed grim, full of thwarted ambition or mental problems.
But it’s just irresistible: making something from nothing.
My work explores the complexity and wonder of our shared human experience, in narrative images. My goal is to achieve a visual clarity like poetry does for language. Currently I’m translating drawings to linoleum and cel-tec blocks and creating limited editions of relief prints. I also love to paint, mainly oil on canvas; my Big Skies series is just about completed.
