Mo Scollan-Painting and Mixed Media

“I am mostly a self taught artist, with painting being the medium that most excites and intrigues me. My fortieth birthday was the galvanizing moment that led me to start painting, and as time goes on that desire (to paint) is replacing the desire to produce functional art. The work of other artists that most inspires me is the development of the German Expressionists and the Bay Area Figurative Artists.”

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, her creative journey has been informed and inspired by extensive travels through disparate locales: the urbanity of Dublin, Ireland led to the transformative 1970’s San Francisco and northern California; brief respites in central and northern Maine spawned a moment in Miami, Florida; finally, more sustained stints in New York City and Seattle, Washington led her to her current domicile in Austin, Texas, where her creativity is currently engaged.

Mo’s creative career started with a silk screen apprenticeship in Dublin, Ireland. Over the years she has been involved in screen printing, graphic design, textile design, designing and producing hand painted fashion, functional ceramics, lighting design, painting on canvas, and gallery directing and curating In 2002 Mo Scollan started 2040 Gallery in Austin Texas; 2040 Gallery showcased mostly local artists working both in the functional and fine art mediums, flavored with a modern eye. She currently works out of her South Austin studio, focusing on painting; she shares her life with her architect husband, Peter.
