"I grew up in the rough and tumble of deep South Texas where I spent a childhood blessedly free and driven by my imagination. My newest body of work, Mythos, taken in part from childhood memories, is born of the awareness that the stories we tell ourselves and others form our personal truths and modern day folklore. The images from this body of work are taken from fragments of memory and figments of imagination to tell stories both true and imagined. Some of the images represent specific memories from my early years, while others are stories of a young girl's yearnings, hopes, fears and dreams. I believe that all of our stories, in essence, the way that we choose to interpret ourselves and our world, are significant and have the power to shape our lives, before finally, they become our lives. This ongoing project is my story. The images are are sometimes, but not always, constructions of several images. Each one begins as notes written about a particular memory or imagining from my childhood. I find working in this way, from a personal narrative, to be very exciting. One memory triggers another. The journey from concept to finish seems to have a mind all its own, as if the story wants to be told as much as I want to do the telling. I photograph with a digital camera, layer and construct the images in a light room, rather than a dark room. I print all of my own work on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta, a beautiful cotton paper made in Germany that has a wood-pulp surface, rendering the rich tonality that I desire."
